The Troy-Bilt 31 cc clutched straight-shaft gas trimmer features convenient EZ-Start choke technology, which allows the user to simply flip the choke, prime the engine, and then give a slow, smooth, easy pull for a guaranteed start. The EZ-Start technology allows the trimmer's engine to engage with 55-percent less effort than most gas models. With its rugged 31 cc engine, the trimmer provides plenty of brawn to power through the most ragged, overgrown growth. The trimmer's professional-style straight-shaft, split-boom design gives easy access underneath low-growing shrubs. The trimmer cuts in a 17-inch radius and features heavy-duty, 0.105-inch dual lines with convenient bump-head line release.
When it's time to replace the line, the featured SpeedSpool line replacement system is exceptionally easy to load and rewind, all without removing the spool or taking it apart. The entire trimmer feels exceptionally balanced and comfortable in the hand, and the ergonomic soft-grip D-shaped handle easily adjusts for both right and left-handed users. The trimmer's engine and upper handle is compatible with other Troy-Bilt EZ-Link attachments (sold separately), a feature that allows you to turn your trimmer into an edger, cultivator, hedge trimmer, blower, or pole saw. The trimmer comes with all the necessary oil for immediate operation, and is covered by a 2-year limited warranty.

Good choice for average homeowner May 26, 2005

I have used this trimmer for two full seasons for typical yard work. It has plenty of power for my purpose, but I'm not convinced it has "plenty of brawn to power through the most ragged, overgrown grass," as the description states. I cannot comment on the brush cutter as I have not used it.The trimmer is relatively light and easy to handle. The strap provided with the trimmer is of little value. It is thin and awkward to use. Although I did use it for a short time, the clip which attaches to the trimmer bent and so I just disposed of it. The trimmer is light enough that a strap isn't necessary for routine yard work.The "EZ-Start" system works very well: it starts very easily, usually with just a pull or two of the cord. The trimmer is loud, but that is expected and is not a personal concern.Although the string became bound on the reel provided with the purchase, I had the problem only once and the bumphead otherwise works reasonably well.I considered three stars for this review given problems with the pull cord. The description states that only a "slow, smooth, easy pull" is necessary to start the trimmer. Perhaps the problem with my trimmer's cord is an anomaly, but it is anything but smooth. The cord often sticks during the pull. Pulling through it is usually not a problem, although the cord recently became bound and had to be serviced. I decided on four stars since, despite the awkward pull of the cord, it still starts on the first or second pull.The trimmer is now in its third season and, other than the cord issue, it is mechanically sound and still starts easily. Overall, I am pleased with the purchase and recommend it for anyone needing a trimmer for routine yard work.

Pray it doesn't break down. August 5, 2005

I purchased the unit for father's day and used it for trimming a field of tall grass. I was amazed at the ease which it trimmed the grass and weeds. The second time I used the unit; it stopped idling and then it died. I then looked in the manual and checked the air filter: it was clean. The next step was to contact a "factory authorized service center" to take my unit to be repaired. I got a list of 10+ such centers in the greater Seattle area. Too bad that none of them would service the unit. One repairman informed me that it was not worth it for them to repair the unit and that it was just not a quality piece of machinery. He told me that may best option was to return it to the store which I had purchased it from. I followed his advice. They offered to replace it but by now I had zero confidence in any Troy Bilt product.

TB90BC broke on 2nd start May 21, 2006

Slick appearing. Lousey operation. While cutting with the blade attachment, cuttings bound-up the blade against the shield and stalled-killed the engine.On attempted re-start, the starter mechanism failed to engage and no one will work on it. Troy-Bilt has no interest to help with a solution (I dare you to contact Troy-Bilt's help line) and LOWES technician recommended that I throw it away and buy a new one. Instead and on reflection, I think I will buy some stock in Troy-Bilt and Lowes. Obviously they are a lot smarter than I am! My hope is that there are are enough other folks out there dumb enough (as I was) to buy one of these TB90BC Trimmer/Brushbutters. If there is, I expect to make enough off my two stock investments to hire somebody to do my little odd jobs (little jobs that I really wanted to do I might add here).Folks, this is a crumby, crummy, lousey, lousy product (no matter how you spell it) to start with and brings with it absolutely ZERO SUPPORT after the sale. Only buy it if you can afford and stand to throw your money away!

Do not buy the Troy-Bilt TB90BC

Warning it's JUNK
Very poor design, materials, and workmanship. To make matters worse the support is non-existent. This is not the Troy Built we used to know and love.
